Last week we discussed gift ideas for every age that are eco-friendly. But what else can you do to have a more environmentally friendly holiday season?
I have lots of ideas; however I will sum up my favorites for you.
Environmentally Friendly Holidays
Send out E-cards or make your own
Not only do you save paper, but also money on stamps. It will reduce your carbon footprint by decreasing the gas that it takes to deliver all those beautiful cards which last about maybe a day before being thrown out.
Use LED lighting for decorations
It is brighter, uses less energy and saves you a ton on your electricity bill. Another way is to use a timer so that your lights are not on 24 hours wasting energy. Awesome right?
Buy a REAL tree. Yes a real one.
Buying a real tree supports small businesses, is renewable, smells amazing, and is recycled into mulch. Potted trees can last years and be replanted. Plastic ones are reusable, however they are made out of petroleum products and most people discard them after they look less attractive.
Connect with Nature (My favorite)
Go on a family hike, enjoy the fresh air, or have a snowball fight. Take part in the Christmas Bird Counts near you, or decorate a tree for the birds with pinecones and birdseed. Just get out and enjoy our wonderful planet.
Find Alternatives to Wrapping Paper
Use tape sparingly or not at all. For more information on this look at my previous post here.
Do not make more than you need or can eat. Try to avoid wasting all those leftovers. Buy locally and compost the scraps. For more party ideas, click here.
The Gift of Giving
Do not like a gift? Instead of just hanging on to it, go through your home and donate what you do not use or want. There is someone out there who will really enjoy it.
Decorating with Green Products
Make it fun and find natural materials, like pine cones, holly, and evergreen branches. Create your own and try to reuse decorations when possible. Choose ones that can be recycled and not fill up the landfill.
Of course there is more to do but those are the important ones in my book. If you want more information on one of these points I list the links at the end! Feel free to click around.
I appreciate your shares and feedbacks and do not be shy to leave a comment!
I wish you the happiest of holidays!!!!
